Through appropriate materials and programming, we will provide a safe, interesting and inviting place for children of all ages to learn from the time they take their first steps toward independence through the time they are reading, researching and learning on their own. Children and caregivers will find books, DVDs, books with CDs, eBooks, puzzles, toys, Early Literacy computers, touch-and-see board, magazines, and children’s programming in SCPL’s Children’s Department.
Birth – 35 months; June 4 – July 16
A program for children and their caregivers, best as a one-on-one experience. Language, motor-skills, and social development are promoted through songs, instruments, books and play. Parent or caregiver must read at least 10 books per week in order to receive the weekly prize. All books must be checked out at one of the SCPL locations.

Rockin’ Reader Storytime
Ages 3 – 3rd Grade; June 4 – 19
Storytime includes music, rhymes, crafts, and other engaging activities that develop the skill necessary to become a strong reader. We offer storytime at all four SCPL locations which last 45 minutes. All children registered for storytime are encouraged to participate in the Summer Reading Program.

This program offers a safe gathering place for older youth to make craft projects and interact with their friends, while continuing to become life-long library users. All participants must read at least 35 minutes per week to receive the weekly prize. Leftover minutes may not be used for the next week. All books must be checked out at one of the SCPL locations or ebooks through Overdrive. You must be in attendance to receive a prize.

Summer Reading Program
Ages 3 – 3rd Grade; June 4 – July 21
If you cannot read, someone may read to you. All books must be checked out or put on hold through Evergreen Indiana at a Spencer County Public Library. You must have an Evergreen Indiana library card in good standing. Every time you read a book, circle or mark out a note on the reading log. We put 20 notes on each line as a suggested amount, you may continue to the next line if needed. Participants may choose prizes each week according to how many books you have read. Leftover points may be used at a later date. You may read for prizes from the first week of program through the last week of program. The last day of program will be the last day to turn your points in for prizes. You may pick up prizes at any SCPL location anytime during regular business hours.
- Picture books & Easy Readers = 1 Note
- Chapter books up to 150 pages = 2 Notes
- 151 pages and above = 3 Notes
